In the framework of World Tourism Day, we present a brief analysis of the main factors and influences that have been decisive in the development of tourism activity worldwide:

Economic Factors: The increase in living standards and income levels among the populations of tourism-generating countries is a crucial factor driving tourism activity. Furthermore, monetary harmonization facilitates international travel.

Technological Factors: Technology has played a fundamental role in the development of the tourism industry, especially in the areas of information and transportation. Tourism marketing relies heavily on technological tools to identify and communicate with specific market niches.

Political and Social Factors: The elimination of barriers to international travel, the efficient functioning of transport and communication services, the reduction of political and military conflicts, and respect for ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity are all factors that promote tourism. Traveler safety is also an essential element.

Demographic Changes: Population aging, the decrease in the working population with more available leisure time, changes in lifestyle, and the growing congestion of urban areas all influence tourism activity.

Globalization: Globalization has standardized lifestyles, tastes, preferences, and the availability of goods and services. It has also fostered the growth of numerous organizations offering tourism-related services.

In addition to these, other elements influence tourism activity, such as the concept of the tourism product, which adapts to the needs and desires of travelers; the ease of marketing any destination; and the variety of needs it fulfills.

Tourism activity is also determined from the perspective of supply and demand, with the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) defining tourism as “all activities carried out by people during their trips to places outside their usual environment for a period not exceeding one year, for leisure, business, or other purposes.”

The Tourism Product: The tourism product encompasses elements such as natural and cultural attractions, accommodation services, restaurants, transportation, and recreational activities, all focused on the traveler’s experience from the start of the trip until their return.

This approach is known as SIT – Special Interest Tourism, which incorporates political, economic, ecological, and psycho-sociological aspects.
